The giant sycamore by this bridge was standing at the time of this battle—the single bloodiest day of America’s bloodiest war. Its young, but already imposing canopy can be seen in the diorama which is displayed at the visitor center and was executed by a Vermont painter, James Hope.

Relics such as these were especially treasured by the soldiers who fought in the war
